Texprint Awards 2009
Although all the designers selected for Texprint are already stars in their field, the Special Prizes awarded at Texprint's First View continue to add a focus for each of the disciplines, with Colour and Breaking New Ground being judged across the whole group. The winners receive £750 and the opportunity to exhibit at Interstoff Asia Essential in Hong Kong, 7th – 9th October 2009.
Texprint is deeply grateful for the support of the Prize Donors, without whom the event could not take place, and would like to thank WGSN, Pantone Europe, Lyle & Scott, The Sanderson Art in Industry Trust, Liberty Art Fabrics and AWI (Australian Wool Innovation) for their invaluable commitment.
Prize judging took place on 15th July in London, at the Triangle Building, Chelsea College of Art & Design.
Breaking New Ground Prize
Donated by WGSN and judged by Giles Deacon
Prize Winner – Nicola Strathearn
“Through her development of really interesting techniques including half-bonded and knitted effects and a wonderful, understated use of colour, I feel that Nicola could work really well with a fashion designer”.
Colour Prize
Donated by Pantone Europe and judged by Barbara Horspool, Group Design Director, New Look
Prize Winner – Lisa Stannard
“Lisa has a beautiful handwriting graphic wise and colour wise – what is amazing is her sensitivity on colour on something that is completely computer generated – it is extraordinary.”

Interior Fashion Prize
Donated by The Sanderson Art in Industry Trust and judged by Grayson Perry, winner of the Turner Prize
Prize Winner – Nancy Taplin
“With dark and haunting references, some verging on the macabre, including WW1, battlefield glamour and the impact of war on womanhood, Nancy has an amazing amount of work which would transfer surprisingly well to interiors”.
Knit Prize
Donated by Lyle & Scott and judged by John Tate, Head of Design, Lyle & Scott
Prize Winner – Hollie Malloney
“Hollie has shown a high level of creativity, very architectural with good reference points and an ability to create a whole look; she has seen the route through from the initial idea and has translated it into something else”.
Print Prize
Donated by Liberty Fabric and judged by Zandra Rhodes
Prize Winner – Ruth Davis
“Ruth has a natural textile
ability, and so many ideas in her sketchbooks which could be adapted
into many possible different end uses; her work is bold and very now,
and she has her own unique identity.”
Weave Prize
Donated by AWI (Australian Wool Innovation) and judged by Ronald Weisbrod, Weisbrod Zuerrer and the Swiss Textile Federation
Prize Winner – Martha Steadman
“Martha uses the dobby machine in a very creative way; her work was inspired by Welsh blankets, but she has taken the scale to a bold level - technically also she has done a great job”.
