TexSelect is renowned for its unique and rigorous selection process. We strive to ensure a representative range of universities and colleges across the UK, reflecting the size and variety of textile courses, and to give an interview to every graduate nominated.
Each year, shortly after Easter, TexSelect invites tutors of all BA and MA textile design courses across the UK to nominate their most creative final year students who will graduate that summer. If you are interested in submitting graduates but are unfamiliar with the process, please CONTACT US for more details.
As there can only be 24 graduates chosen (due to funding and exhibiting restrictions), the tutors are asked to keep their selection to three from each major discipline and to list in order of priority.
In June each year over 200 textile graduates are invited to interview in one-to-one sessions with their portfolios. The interviews are held over three weeks and led by Peter Ring-Lefevre, TexSelect’s creative director. Each day’s interview panel comprises different industry experts who generously give their time to take part in this first, crucial stage of the TexSelect selection process.
Applicants are judged on the standard of their creative work, their skills, their ability to communicate their concepts and interact with others, and their potential to make full use of the opportunities offered for an international audience.
Our aim is to mentor each graduate interviewed and to promote their creative skills to the industry, media and related organisations that can help their career launch. 24 designers from across the UK are finally selected, their work representing a cross-section of all textile disciplines – weave, knit, print and mixed media.
The selected 24 designers are mentored and showcased at several industry events:
TexSelect London Preview is TexSelect’s first showcase of work. It is held in July in London exclusively for TexSelect sponsors, press, college tutors and industry VIPs – and is a great opportunity for all our supporters to enjoy their first view of the designers’ outstanding work.
During the TexSelect London Preview leading figures in the industry are invited to judge the TexSelect Prizes for Fashion, Interiors, Colour and Pattern.
At the event Marks & Spencer decide on the short list and winner for their prize, the Marks & Spencer TexSelect Fashion Fabric Award. WGSN also decide on the short list and winner of their award (new for 2018), The WGSN TexSelect Textiles of the Future Award, as does The Worshipful Company of Woolmen for their award (also new for 2018), The Worshipful Company of Woolmen TexSelect Design Innovation Award for Wool in Interiors.
Mentoring Workshops are also held through the week – these are led by industry experts and intended to introduce the designers to the best professional practices, preparing them for some of the situations that might arise as they sell their work internationally, or simply to ask advice and direction. TexSelect’s Hero Mentor scheme carries the support forward, linking designers with industry professionals who provide ongoing career mentorship.
The main TexSelect showcase of work is held in September at Première Vision Designs, part of the world renowned international textile/materials specialty show Première Vision Paris. Here each designer has their own professional stand within the TexSelect ‘village’ – providing an unique opportunity to meet international buyers and make invaluable contacts, receive commissions, and to talk and network with industry and press.
The Woolmark Company TexSelect Award, donated by The Woolmark Company, is judged and presented at Première Vision Designs.
All winners are announced at the TexSelect Awards Presentation, an event held at Première Vision Designs and attended by industry professionals, press and supporters, and a great opportunity to promote the talent of British textile designers to an international audience.
In addition, TexSelect is sponsored to exhibit at Intertextile Shanghai in September 2018 where examples of the work of the TexSelect prizewinners are displayed. There are also opportunities to intern with some of Italy’s finest mills and manufacturers around Lake Como; to be trained on specialist CAD software; and to have work selected for a curated interiors collection.
